Instado por um cristão novo de Jerusalém, que se fazia portador de preciosos títulos sociais, desejoso de ouvi-lo quanto a remédio eficaz contra as tentações, Simão Pedro, já velhinho, explicou sem rebuços:
—Certo homem de Gaza, que amava profundamente o Senhor e lhe observava, cauteloso, os mandamentos, após cumprir todos os deveres para com a família direta, viu-se, na meia-idade, plenamente liberto das obrigações mais imediatas e, porque suas aspirações mais altas fossem as de integração definitiva com o Altíssimo Pai, consagrou-se à contemplação dos mistérios divinos. Recolheu-se à oração e à meditação exclusivas.
Extasiava-se diante das árvores e das fontes, perante o lar e o céu, louvando o Criador em cânticos interiores de reconhecimento. Tão maravilhosamente fiel se tornara ao Poder Celestial, que as Forças Divinas permitiram ao Espírito das Trevas aproximar-se dele, qual aconteceu, um dia, a Job, na segurança de sua casa em Hus.
O Rei do Mal se acercou do crente perfeito e passou a batalhar com ele, tentando enegrecer-lhe o coração.
Após longos dias de conflito acerbo, o aspirante ao paraíso implorou ao Eterno, em soluços, lhe fornecesse recurso com que se esquivar à tentação. Suplicou auxílio com fervor tão intenso, que o Misericordioso, através de um emissário, aconselhou-o a cultivar a terra.
O piedoso devoto atendeu à ordem, rigorosamente.
Adquiriu extensos lotes de chão, preparou sementeiras e adubou-as; protegeu grelos tenros, dividiu as águas com inteligência; tomou a colaborarão de regular exército de servidores e, vindo o Perverso Dominador, tão ocupada lhe encontrou a mente que foi obrigado a adiar a realização dos escuros propósitos.
O aliado de Deus agiu com tanto brilho que, em breve, a propriedade rural de que se fizera fiador converteu-se em abençoado centro de riqueza geral, a produzir, mecanicamente, para a fartura de todos.
Atendida a designação que procedia do Alto, o mordomo voltou a repousar e o Malvado se lhe abeirou dos passos, novamente.
Outro combate silencioso e o devoto suplicou a intervenção do Altíssimo.
Manifestando-se, por intermédio de devotado mensageiro, recomendou-lhe o Pai Bondoso fiar a lã dos rebanhos de ovinos que lhe povoavam as pastagens, e o beneficiado do conselho celeste observou fielmente a determinação.
Movimentou pessoal, selecionou carneiros, adquiriu teares e agulhas, fez-se credor de larga indústria do fio e, chegando o Maligno, notou-o tão ocupado que, sem guarida para provocações, se refugiou a distância, aguardando oportunidade.
O esforço do missionário, em poucos anos, imprimiu grande prosperidade ao serviço fabril, dispensado-o de maiores preocupações.
Reparando-o livre, regressou o Gênio Satânico rearticulou-se a guerra íntima.
O aprendiz da fé recorreu à prece e outra vez implorou medidas providenciais ao Doador das Bênçãos.
O Poderoso, exprimindo-se por um anjo, induziu-o a moer grãos de trigo para benefício comum.
Voltou o favorecido ao trabalho e construiu, utilizando o concurso de muita gente, valiosos moinhos, suando, à frente de todos, na fabricação de farinhas alvas. Tornando o Dragão das Sombras e percebendo-lhe tão grande preocupação na atividade salvadora, retirou-se de novo, constrangido, espreitando ocasião mais oportuna.
Com o êxito amplo do servo leal, novo descanso abriu-se para ele e Satanás retornou, furioso, à batalha pela posse de sua vida.
O piedoso discípulo da salvação refugiou-se na confiança em Deus e o Todo Amantíssimo, por outro enviado, aconselhou-o a erguer um pomar, em benefício dos servidores que lhe seguiam a experiência.
Retornou o crente ao serviço ativo e tão entregue se achava às responsabilidades novas que o Perseguidor se viu na contingência de retroceder, na expectativa de ensejo adequado.
A fidelidade conferiu ao trabalhador operoso novas bênçãos de merecida prosperidade e o apaziguamento lhe felicitou o caminho.
Quando se fixava o crente, despreocupado e feliz, na beatitude, a fim de melhor agradecer as dádivas divinas, eis que ressurge o Maldito, convocando-o a retomar o duelo oculto.
O devoto, entretanto, compreendendo, por fim, as lições do Senhor, não se internou em novas rogativas. Envolveu-se no serviço útil ao mundo e aos semelhantes, até ao fim de seus dias, quando partiu da Terra ostentando a coroa da eternidade.
O ouvinte sorriu, algo apreensivo, e o velho Pedro, calejado no sofrimento e no sacrifício, terminou, muito calmo:
—O único remédio seguro que conheço contra as tentações é o mergulho do pensamento e das mãos no trabalho que nos dignifique a vida para o Senhor.
E deu por finda a fraternal entrevista.

Urged by a new Christian from Jerusalem, who claimed to be the bearer of precious social titles, wanting to hear from him about an effective remedy against temptations, Simão Pedro, now an old man, explained without hesitation:
—A certain man from Gaza, who deeply loved the Lord and carefully observed his commandments, after fulfilling all the duties to his immediate family, found himself, in middle age, fully freed from the most immediate obligations and, because his higher aspirations were those of definitive integration with the Most High Father, he devoted himself to the contemplation of the divine mysteries. He retired to exclusive prayer and meditation.
He ecstatic before trees and fountains, before home and heaven, praising the Creator in inner songs of recognition. So wonderfully faithful had he become to the Celestial Power, that the Divine Forces allowed the Spirit of Darkness to approach him, as happened, one day, to Job, in the safety of his home in Hus.
The King of Evil approached the perfect believer and began to battle with him, trying to blacken his heart.
After long days of bitter conflict, the aspirant to paradise implored the Eternal, in sobs, to provide him with a resource with which to dodge the temptation. He pleaded for help with such intense fervor that the Merciful, through an emissary, advised him to cultivate the land.
The pious devotee strictly complied with the order.
He acquired extensive plots of land, prepared seedbeds and fertilized them; protected tender sprouts, divided the waters with intelligence; he took the collaboration of a regular army of servants and, when the Perverse Dominator came, his mind was so busy that he was forced to postpone the realization of his dark purposes.
God’s ally acted with such brilliance that, soon, the rural property of which he had become guarantor became a blessed center of general wealth, mechanically producing for everyone’s abundance.
The designation that came from Above having been answered, the butler went back to rest and Malvado approached his steps again.
Another silent combat and the devotee begged the intervention of the Most High.
Manifesting himself, through a devoted messenger, the Kind Father recommended that he spin the wool of the flocks of sheep that populated his pastures, and the beneficiary of the heavenly council faithfully observed the determination.
He moved personnel, selected sheep, acquired looms and needles, made himself the creditor of a large thread industry and, when the Evil One arrived, noticed him so busy that, with no room for provocations, he took refuge at a distance, waiting for an opportunity.
The missionary’s effort, in a few years, brought great prosperity to the factory service, exempting him from major concerns.
Fixing it free, the Satanic Genie returned and rejoined the intimate war.
The apprentice of faith resorted to prayer and again implored providential measures from the Giver of Blessings.
The Mighty One, speaking through an angel, induced him to grind grains of wheat for the common good.
He returned the favored one to work and built, using the help of many people, valuable mills, sweating, ahead of everyone, in the manufacture of white flour. Becoming the Dragon of Shadows and realizing that he was so concerned about his saving activity, he withdrew again, embarrassed, looking for a more opportune occasion.
With the loyal servant’s widespread success, a new rest opened up to him, and Satan returned, furious, to battle for possession of his life.
The pious disciple of salvation took refuge in trust in God and the All Amantissimo, by another envoy, advised him to erect an orchard, for the benefit of the servants who followed his experience.
The believer returned to active service and was so committed to new responsibilities that the Persecutor found himself in the contingency of retreating, in anticipation of a suitable opportunity.
Loyalty conferred new blessings of well-deserved prosperity on the hardworking worker, and appeasement congratulated him on his way.
When the believer, carefree and happy, focused on beatitude, in order to better thank the divine gifts, behold, the Cursed One reappears, summoning him to resume the hidden duel.
The devotee, however, finally understanding the Lord’s lessons, did not enter into new rogatives. He engaged himself in useful service to the world and his fellowmen, until the end of his days, when he departed Earth bearing the crown of eternity.
The listener smiled, somewhat apprehensively, and old Pedro, hardened by suffering and sacrifice, ended very calmly:
—The only sure remedy I know against temptations is to plunge our minds and hands into work that will dignify our lives for the Lord.
And he ended the fraternal interview.
