Grande número de visitantes, inclinados ao estudo da Doutrina Espírita, alguns deles egressos de tratamento psiquiátrico, apresentavam-se em nossa reunião pública do Grupo Espírita da Prece. A maioria falava de insegurança e desalento perante as lutas necessárias e edificantes da vida. Comentavam alguns, ainda, os avanços do materialismo e a descrença, às vezes fria, de muitos homens de cultura científica.
Quando o horário nos chamou à execução do programa doutrinário da noite, O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo nos deu para estudo o item 4 do capítulo V. As explanações do tema pelos companheiros espíritas foram as melhores. No término dos trabalhos, Emmanuel escreveu a página sobre religião e tratamento de saúde.
Religião e tratamento
Companheiros vários indagam pelo motivo do recrudescimento das moléstias mentais nos tempos modernos.
Milhares de pessoas se acusam portadoras de traumas e frustrações, recorrendo às ciências psicológicas para tratamento adequado.
Realmente, a formulação de recursos medicamentosos a que se endereçam, com a chancela da autoridade profissional, poderia ser feita sem maior especificação. Entretanto, os pacientes desejam algo mais que o socorro químico.
Precisam destacadamente da palavra esclarecedora e edificante que lhes recomponha as emoções e lhes ilumine o entendimento.
Por isso mesmo, o médico das forças espirituais é procurado hoje, à feição de sacerdote da ciência, habilitado a oficiar na religião da consciência reta a fim de educar a vida e sublimá-la.
Que isso é alto progresso humano não há negar. Isso, porém, demonstra igualmente que a assistência religiosa é inarredável da paz e da felicidade das criaturas.
O aprimoramento da técnica acelerou o engrandecimento da indústria. A indústria avançada incentivou a produção de valores materiais.
E, no parque imenso das facilidades e garantias ao reconforto físico, a carência de alimento espiritual patrocina desequilíbrios em múltiplas direções.
A anemia da vida interior estabelece pequenos e grandes colapsos do mundo íntimo e, em razão disso, sobram perturbações e necessidades da alma em quase todos os setores da evolução.
À frente do painel de semelhantes conflitos, meditemos na importância do amparo religioso e não permitas se te apague a luz da fé onde estiveres.
Se te encontras a sós, nos princípios religiosos que te nutrem a vida, faze o teu momento de reflexão e de prece, entre os horários de cada dia; atende ao culto periódico da oração e do estudo iluminativo com os familiares e amigos que te possam acompanhar nos impulsos de reverência a Deus; não sonegues a palavra serena e reconfortante da crença que abraças nos diálogos com os irmãos de caminho; e, quanto puderes, prestigia o templo religioso a que te vinculas, cooperando espontaneamente, a fim de que a tua casa de fé, possa atender aos programas de serviço ao próximo em que se compromete, diante do Eterno Bem.
Compreendamos, por fim, que o progresso tecnológico, na ciência, é irreversível, mas em nossa condição de Espíritos imortais, encarnados ou não, somos obrigados a reconhecer que o amparo espiritual na religião é irreversível também.

A large number of visitors interested in the study of the Spiritist Doctrine, some of them having graduated from psychiatric treatment, came to our public meeting of the Spiritist Group of Prece. Most spoke of insecurity and dismay in the face of life’s necessary and uplifting struggles. Some also commented on the advances of materialism and the disbelief, sometimes cold, of many men of scientific culture.
When the schedule called us to carry out the evening’s doctrinal program, The Gospel According to Spiritism gave us item 4 of chapter V to study. The explanations of the theme by the spiritist companions were the best. At the end of the work, Emmanuel wrote the page on religion and health care.
Religion and treatment
Various companions question the reason for the resurgence of mental illnesses in modern times.
Thousands of people accuse themselves of having traumas and frustrations, resorting to the psychological sciences for adequate treatment.
In fact, the formulation of drug resources to which they are addressed, with the seal of professional authority, could be done without further specification. However, patients want something more than chemical help.
They need an enlightening and edifying word that restores their emotions and illuminates their understanding.
For this very reason, the doctor of spiritual forces is sought today, as a priest of science, qualified to officiate in the religion of right conscience in order to educate life and sublimate it.
That this is high human progress cannot be denied. This, however, also demonstrates that religious assistance is inseparable from the peace and happiness of creatures.
The improvement of the technique accelerated the aggrandizement of the industry. Advanced industry encouraged the production of material values.
And, in the immense park of facilities and guarantees of physical comfort, the lack of spiritual nourishment causes imbalances in multiple directions.
The anemia of the inner life establishes small and large collapses in the intimate world and, as a result, there are disturbances and needs of the soul in almost all sectors of evolution.
Ahead of the panel of similar conflicts, let us meditate on the importance of religious support and do not allow the light of faith to be extinguished wherever you are.
If you find yourself alone, in the religious principles that nourish your life, take your time for reflection and prayer, between the hours of each day; attend the periodic service of prayer and illuminating study with family and friends who can accompany you in reverence for God; do not withhold the serene and comforting word of the belief that you embrace in the dialogues with the brothers on the way; and, as much as you can, give prestige to the religious temple to which you are bound, cooperating spontaneously, so that your house of faith can attend to the programs of service to others in which it is committed, before the Eternal Good.
Finally, we understand that technological progress in science is irreversible, but in our condition as immortal Spirits, incarnated or not, we are obliged to recognize that spiritual support in religion is also irreversible.
