Um juiz cristão, rigoroso nas aplicações da lei humana, mas fiel no devotamento ao Evangelho, encontrando-se em meio duma sociedade corrompida e perversa, orou, implorando a presença de Jesus.
Tantas sentenças condenatórias devia proferir diariamente, que se lhe endurecera o coração.
Atormentado, porém, entre a confiança que consagrava ao Divino Mestre e as acusações que se acreditava compelido a formular, rogou, certa noite, ao Senhor, lhe esclarecesse o espírito angustiado.
Efetivamente, sonhou que Jesus vinha desfazer-lhe as dúvidas aflitivas.
Ajoelhou-se aos pés do Amoroso Amigo e perguntou:
—Mestre, que normas adotar perante um homicida? Não estará logicamente incurso nas penas legais?
O Cristo sorriu, de leve, e respondeu:
—Sim, o criminoso está condenado a receber remédio corretivo, por doente da alma.
O juiz considerou estranha a resposta; contudo prosseguiu indagando:
—Como agir, ante o delinquente rude, Senhor?
—Está condenado a valer-se de nosso auxílio, através da educação pelo amor paciente e construtivo — explicou Jesus, bondoso e calmo.
—Mestre, e que corrigenda aplicar ao preguiçoso?
—Está condenado a manejar a enxada ou a picareta, conquistando o pão com o suor do rosto.
—Que farei da mulher pervertida? — interrogou o jurista, surpreso.
—Está condenada a beneficiar-se de nosso amparo fraterno, a fim de que se reerga para a elevação do trabalho e para a dignidade humana.
—Senhor, como julgar o ignorante?
—Está condenado aos bons livros.
—E o fanático?
—Está condenado a ser ouvido e interpretado com tolerância e caridade, até que aprenda a libertar a própria alma.
—Mestre, e que diretrizes adotar, ante um ladrão?
—Está condenado à oficina e à escola, sob vigilância benéfica.
—E se o ladrão é um assassino?
—Está condenado ao hospício, onde se lhe cure a mente envenenada.
O magistrado passou a meditar gravemente e lembrou-se de que deveria modificar todas as peças do tribunal, substituindo a discriminação de castigos diversos por remédio, serviço, fraternidade e educação. Todavia, não se sentindo bem com a própria consciência, endereçou ao Senhor suplicante olhar, e perguntou, depois de longos instantes:
—Mestre, e de mim mesmo, que farei?
Jesus sorriu, ainda uma vez, e disse, sereno:
—O cristão está condenado a compreender e ajudar, amar e perdoar, educar e construir, distribuir tarefas edificantes e bênçãos de luz renovadora, onde estiver.
Nesse momento, o juiz acordou em lágrimas e, de posse da sublime lição que recebera, reconheceu que, dali em diante, seria outro homem.

A Christian judge, rigorous in the application of human law, but faithful in his devotion to the Gospel, finding himself in the midst of a corrupt and perverse society, prayed, imploring the presence of Jesus.
So many condemnatory sentences he had to pronounce daily, that his heart was hardened.
Tormented, however, between the trust that he consecrated to the Divine Master and the accusations that he believed himself compelled to formulate, he prayed, one night, to the Lord, to clarify his anguished spirit.
In fact, he dreamed that Jesus was coming to solve his distressing doubts.
He knelt at the Loving Friend’s feet and asked:
—Master, what rules to adopt when dealing with a murderer? Is it not logically subject to legal penalties?
The Christ smiled, slightly, and replied:
—Yes, the criminal is condemned to receive corrective medicine, for being sick in the soul.
The judge found the answer strange; yet he went on to inquire:
—How to act in the face of the rude delinquent, Sir?
“He is condemned to avail himself of our aid, through education by patient and constructive love,” explained Jesus, kindly and calm.
—Master, and what corrigendum to apply to the lazy?
— He is condemned to handle the hoe or the pickaxe, earning bread with the sweat of his brow.
“What shall I do with the perverted woman?” asked the jurist, surprised.
— She is condemned to benefit from our fraternal support, so that she can rise again for the elevation of work and for human dignity.
—Lord, how to judge the ignorant?
— He is condemned to the good books.
“And the fanatic?”
— He is doomed to be heard and interpreted with tolerance and charity, until he learns to free his own soul.
—Master, and what guidelines to adopt, in the face of a thief?
— He is condemned to the workshop and the school, under beneficent supervision.
“What if the thief is a murderer?”
— He is condemned to the asylum, where his poisoned mind is cured.
The magistrate began to meditate seriously and remembered that he should modify all the parts of the court, replacing the discrimination of different punishments with medicine, service, fraternity and education. However, not feeling well with his own conscience, he addressed the supplicant look to the Lord, and asked, after long moments:
—Master, and of myself, what shall I do?
Jesus smiled once more and said serenely:
—The Christian is condemned to understand and help, love and forgive, educate and build, distribute edifying tasks and blessings of renewing light, wherever he is.
At that moment, the judge woke up in tears and, in possession of the sublime lesson he had received, recognized that, from then on, he would be another man.
