À frente de todos os presentes, o Mestre narrou com simplicidade:
—Certo homem encontrou a luz da Revelação Divina e desejou ardentemente habilitar-se para viver entre os Anjos do Céu.
Tanto suplicou essa bênção ao Pai que, através da inspiração, o Senhor o enviou ao aprimoramento necessário com vistas ao fim a que se propunha.
Por intermédio de vários amigos, orientados pelo Poder Divino, o candidato, que demonstrava acentuada tendência pela escultura, foi conduzido a colaborar com antigo mestre, em mármore valioso. No entanto, a breve tempo, demitiu-se, alegando a impossibilidade de submeter-se a um homem ríspido e intratável; transferiu-se, desse modo, para uma oficina consagrada à confecção de utilidades de madeira, sob as diretrizes de velho escultor. Abandonou-o também, sem delongas, asseverando que lhe não era possível suportá-lo. Em seguida, empregou-se sob as determinações de conhecido operário especializado em construção de colunas em estilo grego. Não tardou, entretanto, a deixá-lo, declarando não lhe tolerar as exigências.
Logo após, entregou-se ao trabalho, sob as ordens de experimentado escultor de ornamentações em arcos festivos, mas, finda uma semana, fugiu aos compromissos assumidos, afirmando haver encontrado um chefe por demais violento e irritadiço. Depois, colocou-se sob a orientação de um fabricante de arcas preciosas, de quem se afastou, em poucos dias, a pretexto de se tratar de criatura desalmada e cruel.
E, assim, de tarefa em tarefa, de oficina em oficina, o aspirante ao Céu dizia, invariavelmente, que não lhe era possível incorporar as próprias energias à experiência terrestre, por encontrar, em toda parte, o erro, a maldade e a perseguição nos que o dirigiam, até que a morte veio buscá-lo à presença dos Anjos do Senhor.
Com surpresa, porém, não os encontrou tão sorridentes quanto aguardava. Um deles avançou, triste, e indagou:
—Amigo, por que não te preparaste ante os imperativos do Céu?
O interpelado que identificava a própria inferioridade, nas sombras em que se envolvia, clamou em pranto que só havia encontrado exigência e dureza nos condutores da luta humana.
O Mensageiro, no entanto, observou, com amargura:
—O Pai chamou-te a servir em teu próprio proveito e, não, a julgar. Cada homem dará conta de si mesmo a Deus. Ninguém escapará à Justiça Divina que se pronuncia no momento preciso. Como pudeste esquecer tão simples verdade, dentro da vida? O malho bate a bigorna, o ferreiro conduz o malho, o comerciante examina a obra do ferreiro, o povo dá opinião sobre o negociante, e o Senhor, no Conjunto, analisa e julga a todos. Se fugiste a pequenos serviços do mundo, sob a alegação de que os outros eram incapazes e indignos da direção, como poderás entender o ministério celestial?
E o trabalhador inconstante passou às consequências de sua queda impensada.
Jesus fez uma pausa e concluiu:
—Quem estiver sob o domínio de pessoas enérgicas e endurecidas na disciplina, excelentes resultados conseguirá recolher se souber e puder aproveitar-lhes a aspereza, inspirando-se na madeira bruta ao contacto da plaina benfeitora. Abençoada seja a mão que educa e corrige, mas bem-aventurado seja aquele que se deixa aperfeiçoar ao seu toque de renovação e aprimoramento, porque os mestres do mundo sempre reclamam a lição de outros mestres, mas a obra do bem, quando realizada para todos, permanece eternamente.

In front of all those present, the Master narrated with simplicity:
—A certain man found the light of Divine Revelation and ardently desired to qualify to live among the Angels of Heaven.
So much did he plead for this blessing to the Father that, through inspiration, the Lord sent him to the necessary improvement with a view to the purpose for which he proposed.
Through several friends, guided by the Divine Power, the candidate, who showed a marked tendency for sculpture, was led to collaborate with the former master, in valuable marble. However, a short time later, he resigned, claiming the impossibility of submitting to a harsh and intractable man; He therefore transferred himself to a workshop dedicated to the manufacture of wooden utilities, under the guidance of an old sculptor. He abandoned it too, without delay, asserting that it was not possible for him to bear it. Then he took a job under the orders of a well-known workman specializing in the construction of columns in the Greek style. He was not long, however, in leaving him, declaring that he did not tolerate his demands.
Soon after, he went to work, under the orders of an experienced sculptor of decorations in festive arches, but, after a week, he ran away from the commitments he had assumed, claiming to have found a boss who was too violent and irritable. Afterwards, he placed himself under the guidance of a maker of precious chests, from whom he departed in a few days, on the pretext of being a heartless and cruel creature.
And so, from task to task, from workshop to workshop, the aspirant to Heaven would invariably say that it was not possible for him to incorporate his own energies into the terrestrial experience, because he found error, evil and persecution everywhere. in those who directed him, until death came to seek him from the presence of the Angels of the Lord.
To his surprise, however, he did not find them as smiling as he had expected. One of them advanced, sad, and asked:
—Friend, why didn’t you prepare yourself before the imperatives of Heaven?
The respondent who identified his own inferiority, in the shadows in which he was involved, cried out in tears that he had only found demand and hardness in the leaders of human struggle.
The Messenger, however, remarked, with bitterness:
—The Father has called you to serve on your own behalf and not to judge. Every man will give an account of himself to God. No one will escape the Divine Justice that is pronounced at the right time. How could you forget so simple truth, within life? The mallet hits the anvil, the blacksmith drives the mallet, the merchant examines the blacksmith’s work, the people give their opinion about the merchant, and the Lord, in the Ensemble, analyzes and judges everyone. If he fled the small services of the world, on the grounds that others were incapable and unworthy of direction, how can you understand the heavenly ministry?
And the fickle worker passed on to the consequences of his thoughtless fall.
Jesus paused and concluded:
—Whoever is under the control of energetic people, hardened in discipline, will be able to reap excellent results if they know how and can take advantage of their roughness, taking inspiration from raw wood in contact with the benefactor planer. Blessed is the hand that educates and corrects, but blessed is the one who allows himself to be perfected by its renewing and perfecting touch, because the masters of the world always claim the lesson of other masters, but the work of good, when done for all , remains forever.
