In 1869, a call to commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of João Huss, a champion of freedom of thought and martyr, was made. The appeal invited all admirers of Huss, both Bohemians and Slavs, to gather in Prague and Hussinecz to honor his memory and gain strength for the ongoing struggle for truth and liberty.
